ORANGE
the color?
a town in new jersey?
the flipside of the beatles?
the fruit?
the sun?
the unrhymeable?
ORANGE is kurt weisman's second album
(after 2008's spiritual sci-fi, a few 7"s & e.p.'s, and his work in Feathers)
it is a brilliantly chiseled gem. a beautiful garnet, or perhaps an orange chalcedony.
there are traces of traditional norwegian melodies, atonal counterpoint, simple folk songs, new age blues, spacy doo wop, neo-classicism, love songs and a detour of the following....(orange lady, orange was the color of her dress then blue silk, shades of orange, orange juice blues, woodsmoke & oranges, onion orange, apples & oranges, funktion orange, draped in fluorescent orange, orange claw hammer, oranges & lemons)
kurt abandoned the micro-editing & digital processing of his previous music (for now)
there isn't a trace of computer trickery on ORANGE which makes this a straight forward, well balanced, deceptively simple(r), honest album.
there isn't a single note of filler here, every sound sits still in perfect place.
kurt lives in a cabin in the woods near putney, vermont.
it seems that the quiet, peaceful isolation permeated this music.
these songs were ingrained and steeped deeply within kurt's soul (and fingers) over the course of a few years. now he is a mirror reflecting them back to us with love to the universe.
ORANGE is mostly kurt singing and playing guitars but there are tasteful additions of clarinets from robert stillman (horses) and kinetic sparkling keyboards from eliot krimsky (glass ghost) & a touch of other instruments & sounds by kurt. included is a nice insert of a woodblock print of a horse by ben stamper (ben + vesper) who also helped produce the album.
these are songs of ascension.
(thermal clouds. bird flight. spirits rising. love growing. spirals. wide open skies. heavenward.)
in his special way, maybe kurt has found his own center, his deep bliss, his unique way to tap into the universal BODY / MIND.
ORANGE will be everyone's new favorite color.
shining the most radiantly pure light into your ears.

chris weisman & greg davis - northern songs LP
release date: 2010
300 copies
drawings by ryan storm
ben vida is best known for his work as bird show or town & country or singer or any number of other projects he's been involved with over the past decade or so.
ben has been totally zonking out to morton subotnick, robert ashley, league of automatic music composers, karlheinz stockhausen, klaus schulze, aphex twin and more.
and this cassette showcases his recent forays into electronic synthesizer music. he has been slowly refining his set-up/sound/process to achieve more and more unique & varied results.
there has been a lot of new synth music floating around recently but ben stands firmly away from the usual drone/new age/kraut/ambient zone on this one. instead, he dials in some great automatic/hands-free patches on his moog voyager semi-modular system and lets them do their thing.
what we get here is a swirling, cycling mass of tones and shapes and colors. the process of now. the idea of eternity is just around the corner. ben selected excerpts from these infinite synth patches and they all flow together to make an energetic and dynamic listening experience.

ruth garbus used to be in a band called Feathers. you might remember them if you were absorbed in the neo-psych-folk-whatever-you-call-it scene about half a decade ago or so. (she still plays with kyle t. in a band called happy birthday / she lives with c. weisman in brattleboro / her sister is merrill TuNe-yaRdS)
ruth has been slowly crafting a bunch of solo songs in private. a couple of years ago, she made a short album called ruthie's requests on a little cassette machine.
(if you blinked, you probably missed it)
well now its 2010 and she is here with some NEW VERMONT MUSIC.
(and there is more to come....)
this is her orbital turn.
a chance for her tones to float out over the airwaves now...
we are very happy to present you with ruth's debut album, Rendezvous with Rama.
these days, not many people can pull off a record this lovely of just electric guitar and vocals but ruth does it. her music flows with ease and beauty and grace. her guitar parts suggest cascading choirs and unheard contrapuntal vistas. and her lyrics invoke scenes from:
imaginary worlds (visual art)
everyday worlds (house painter)
we are lucky to get a glimpse into the creative fantasy/reality lands of this quiet artist.
recorded in burlington, vermont by ryan power in a large warehouse with spacious natural reverb.
an intimate fall / winter vibe captured on a 2-track reel to reel tape machine.this is perfect music for snowfalling(s)
fragile and flowing
dark and joyous
natural and quiet
movement and stillness
(possible reference point: vashti bunyan singing & playing an electric guitar, recording for ECM?)
ruth's songs get deeper and different and beyond any of those easy references.
is she a singer/songwriter? folk musician? chanteuse? torch singer? jazz vocalist? new age artist? tropicalia? early music?
im not sure what we should call it.
maybe all of the above.
well it doesn't really matter anyhow because
we think you'll think ruth's new album is SUPER GOOD.
ar009 kurt weisman & chris weisman - over the shadow's door 7"
release date: 10/20/09
300 hand numbered copies with
hand stamped labels
on colored vinyl (pink & blue)
cover art by emma weisman
over the shadow's door is a unified artistic project by the ever creative weisman siblings. a title was chosen and then kurt, chris and emma set about making music / art to correspond with the title. this is the result.
kurt opens things up on side a with lovely spiralling acoustic guitar patterns and his trademark high angelic tenor falsetto vocals (along with the ghost of kurt weisman singing even higher vocal harmonies!)
"no i can not be a man anymore"
on side b, chris slashes and cuts through echoed word raps over spindly guitar licks and drum stick clicks (he'll explain it to you in the song). the chorus reaches a droney low voice counterpoint stasis. a nice little coda at the end with brazilian guitar tones and a chunky bassline.
"who says that i can't find the floor?"
emma's artwork is a wonderful children's book style cross hatch illustration. someone crawling on floor trying to open the purple shadow door. while another on the first floor is climbing a ladder to peer at the ceiling galaxies / stars. strange paintings on the wall above the orange couch. are there are more questions than answers?
AR008 GREG DAVIS - PRIMES CD
release date: 06-2009
300 copies
(with a special limited edition of 25 copies with 5 5"X5" signed and numbered artist's prints by jeff davis)
silk-screened cardboard ECOPAK
artwork by jeff davis
these pieces grew out of my research and interest in just intonation
and prime numbers. during my explorations, i came across some
interesting prime number sets and wondered what they would sound
like. i constructed these pieces using sine wave generators in max/msp.
i chose a base frequency (fundamental) for each piece and multiplied that
number by each of the prime numbers in a given set to determine the
harmonics / partials / overtones. most of the overtones were transposed down
several octaves to fit within a comfortable 2-3 octave range. this became
my “scale” or harmonic zone for each piece. i related the panning and metronome
speed of each overtone to its frequency. rhythmically, each sine tone / frequency
followed its own 3 beat cycle which created overlapping
prime number rhythmic patterns.
beat 1 = base frequency for that given overtone
beat 2 = an octave higher
beat 3 = silence (rest)
the lower overtones had faster rhythmic cycles and the higher overtones
had slower rhythmic cycles. this was a way for me to relate the rhythm
to the prime number sets and integrate it with the harmony while still
retaining a musical texture that was interesting to me. i used a simple stereo delay
to blur the rhythmic texture to create more of a slowly
shifting, patterned harmonic cloud.
these pieces are dedicated to james tenney (1934-2006).
they are an acknowledgment of his extraordinary work with
alternate tuning systems and just intonation.
his musical life should be an inspiration to us all.

'northern songs' is the debut collaborative project between fellow vermonters, chris weisman & greg davis. chris has been prolifically & quietly writing and recording songs for many years. greg has been involved in all types of music and has made many records for various labels. he is maybe best known for his drone music and his electro-acoustic computer music work.
for this album, chris sent greg some basic songs on 4-track tapes. usually just guitars, vocals, and maybe another instrument here or there. greg dumped the tracks into his computer and overdubbed all manner of instruments, vocals, and used his signature computer processing techniques to further embellish, explode & extend the arrangements of the songs. the result is a strange, fantastic, wonderful, joyous, weird world of songs with many twists and turns & harmonic / melodic / textural surprises. it is a journey from beginning to end. it takes some time to get acclimated to this sound world, but give it a chance to seep in. repeated listenings will reward the listener & reveal more and more detail, depth and beauty.
'northern songs' is the perfect marriage of chris' lyrical imagery & far out song-craft with greg's expansive computer production / arrangement & compositional ideas. we are really excited about this record & we hope that you will enjoy it.
midway was a limited edition tour cdr release. it featured 2 live sets by greg davis from 2007 & 2006 respectively.
ottawa, ontario was an opening set for the books. greg played korg mono/poly analog synth, shruti box, bells, vocals and computer. thick solid meditative drones.
arlington, massachusetts was a live set from the first brainwaves festival. greg invited joe grimm to play with him. greg played khaen, bells, vocals and computer. joe grimm played violin and vocals. deep ritual bright ecstatic drones.
AR004 SUN CIRCLE - SUN CIRCLE LP
release date: 12-2008
525 copies
autumn records is back with a LP reissue of the debut cdr by sun circle on lichen records.
this LP is a musical offering by the duo of zach wallace and greg davis. side a features ecstatic full wail vocals and organ drones peace noise. side b soothes with repetitive washes of bells gongs and chimes.
AR003 ROTFLOL - ROLLING ON THE FLOOR LAUGHING OUT LOUD 7" (autumn records seven inch series #2)
release date: 2-11-03
500 copies
a1. ghost forest night rave
a2. dunes of plenty (dudes of plenty)
b1. danny's revenge
b2. i heart computerz
rotflol is pittsburgh based jacob ciocci, part of the paperrad crew (along with jessica ciocci and ben jones). when jacob isn't creating zines or flash animations or busy at CMU, he is making music that's as colorful as the clothes he wears. here he brings us four lo-fi, melodic, junked out, video gamey, crazy dancetime electro tracks. positive, fun, and uplifting. this music is like all of this 'neo-electro/synth pop' stuff, except better and without the cold, robotic, black turtleneck attitude. jacob also created wonderful day-glo hand silkscreened covers himself for a little retinal dazzle which completes the rotflol experience.
AR002 GREG DAVIS & DON MENNERICH SPLIT 7" (autumn records seven inch series #1)
chicago based greg davis brings you two tracks that are an extension of his 'arbor' album on carpark records. acoustic guitars mingle with field recordings, crisps, and bubbles. a pleasant marriage of organic and electronic sounds.
new york based don mennerich offers up two songs with touches of folk, prog, and post-rock. also combining acoustic guitars with washes of field recordings, mlm, synth, murkiness, and gloppy beats. eerie and lovely at the same time.
